The Story of Sandstone

Susan Leonard

I bought Boomer shortly after my husband and I bought our first home. Our first puppy was beautiful, and I had already spent years showing horses and I enjoyed the competition. So, with the support of the breeders of his sire and dam, I made the decision to show Boomer, or as he later came to be known, Ch. Deck’In’s Sandstone Boomerang (Ch. Northwoods Sandman “Mug” x Deck’In’s Nutmeg of Portledge “Nutmeg”). At the age of 11 months, Boomer was Winners Dog his very first time in the ring, earning his first points towards his Championship with me handling after having just completed a breed handling class near my home.

Needless to say we were hooked. Our journey in dogs has spanned 28 years, three states (New York; Chicago, IL;  and currently Houston, TX) and has brought us lifelong friendships and beautiful memories we cherish. Robert and I are blessed to have our now grown daughters Chloe and Carly share in the raising and showing of these dogs in this wonderful breed that we adore.

The one who started it all, Ch. Deck'Ins Sandstone Boomerang "Boomer" and I winning 2 points under breeder judge Terry DePietro.

I am the proud owner of a Sandstone Labrador! I have known Susan Leonard for nearly 20 years and when it was time for me to get a puppy, she was my my first and only thought. Susan has put so much time, energy, and love into her breeding program, it really shows in the quality of her dogs and I couldn’t be happier with the puppy I received. Susan kept me, and all the future families, up to date on the whelping and early weeks of the puppies lives, each one was was carefully placed in the appropriate home. Every puppy went home with a through packet of information on proper care and training, a 5 generation pedigree, clearances for sure and dam, as well as AKC registration and microchip information, which was beyond helpful. I couldn’t have been any luckier when receiving Wayne. He was adorable, and a very well socialized boy, he had no problem settling into our household at 9 weeks and we were all smitten! Since I am a avid equestrian, and competitor, it was most fortunate that my puppy was the real deal, a show quality dog, true to the Labrador breed standard. Off we went to local conformation classes, and I began learning about dog shows. Showing is a wonderful experience for people and animals, Susan helped me navigate my way through and Wayne finished with his champion title, officially he is Ch. Sandstone Ten Gallon Hat! I can’t say enough positive things about Sandstone Labradors and Susan Leonard, they are the very best available!

Sandstone Labradors is a small, high-quality kennel offering stud service, puppies and older dogs when available. We keep an active show schedule and rarely breed more than once a year. Our first love is showing, but we do work our dogs with birds in the field as often as we possibly can to ensure we retain the ability to do the job Labradors were intended to do.
